final Synopsis

Our overall idea for there to be two stories. One, is the singer, on her own, singing the story and letting out emotion. The other, is the singer in the story, this is the relationship of the man and woman, and how her life is. This will be a split screen for the whole music video. Therefore showing both stories at the same time. At the end of the video the two stories will swap, showing the character in how she wants the story to finish, and how it actually does.

The music video similar to other music videos of our genre, as it will tell a story behind the lyrics of the song. However it will also be different to the genre, as many Soul Pop artists, that we have researched, do not have a split screen story. The story side will have the generic settings and costumes for a typical Soul Pop music video. The other side will have generic settings and costumes as a performer to an audience.

The narrative we will be showing is a linear love story, which is the most popular type of narrative within our genre. The female singer will dominate it. Andrew Goodwin came up with the theory of amplifying, which we will be creating; this is manipulating the audience in relating to the artist and her music. We will also use amplifying to repeat meanings. As well as using Goodwin’s theory of a illustrative narrative which provides a literal representation of images.

We are following Propp’s narrative theory of stock characters within our music video for example; we use the female singer as both the princess and heroin within the narrative. We also include another character who is displayed as the villain by the way he treats her. This represents a patriarchal society whereby it is mainly dominated by men.

Within our music video, we have displayed binary oppositions which links to Levi-Strauss’ theory. Through this we create the oppositions of Good and Bad. This manipulates the audience to side with the artist who is the ‘good’ person.

Our narrative structure is following Todorov’s theory, which is the five stages. We have done this by starting with an equilibrium. This is where the singer in the music video is in a healthy state of mind. This is disrupted by the male in the video who dominates and changes her state of mind. The female recognises this and attempts to restore her state of mind by leaving. This brings a new equilibrium to the end of the music video.

We are conforming to our genre’s narrative convention by keeping to the codes of this genre (romance conflict). Although we are conforming, we are also challenging it due to the split screen that we are doing. This creates two stories, meaning that the real story and the story portrayed have different endings in the romance conflict.

Our music video will appeal to our target audience of young women as the narrative and lyrics of the song are easy to follow and relate to. This is amplified through the characters in the video. It will also be appealing to this audience because the singer herself is easy to relate to through her age. Secondly, the narrative structure follows the codes and conventions of today’s female modern singers.
We are engaging with the audience by creating a new type of music video through a different layout to normal Soul Pop videos. We have done this through split screen, creating two stories about the same character.

Our music video could be criticised through the images shown. The way the male character acts towards the female character could be quite aggressive for the audience to watch. Also the storyline could be quite confusing and not get across the real meaning of the lyrics. At the end of the video, the same character does the opposite action; this may indicate that overall men dominate over women and therefore, could cause some inferior reactions.

Lyrics

Ragdoll

Verse 1
There were times when I, couldn't bring myself to cry
There were times when I couldn't sing
You took my life and you tied it in knots
gave me love hearts made out of strings

Chorus
If I picked a Daisy, for each time you blamed me
I could make Daisy Chain for you
Maybe you love me, Maybe you love me not
I'm just a Ragdoll to you

Verse 2
Smiling like a clown
When inside I feel grey
kiss me better just like before
you hold me close, then you push me away
like a toy that's been thrown to the floor

Chorus
If I picked a Daisy, for each time you saved me
I could make Daisy Chain for you
Maybe you love me, Maybe you love me not
I'm just a Ragdoll to you

Bridge
You want me, to be who I'm not
To slip into line, and have it all your way
but who are you, to tell me who I'm not
Your perfect ideal, just isn't real
It's not me
I'm not pretending to be your Ragdoll no more...

Chorus
If I picked a Daisy, for each time you changed me
I could make Daisy Chain for you
Maybe you love me, Maybe you love me not
I'm just a Ragdoll to you

Maybe you love me, Maybe you love me not
but I'm not a Ragdoll to you

artist - profile

Lily is 19 years old, born on the 1st December 1991. She lives in a small town in Wales where she did her first performance at the age of 9 in front of her father and younger brother as her audience. Her father is very supportive in her singing career, and when she was 12 they moved to London so that she could audition for theatre school.  The school saw real potential for her, however Lily’s father was unable to afford for her to go.
During her childhood and years running up till now, she’s had many musical influences. These artists include Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and recently Adele, Leona Lewis and Kelly Clarkson.
In 2008, at age 16, when she left school, she went back to Wales to perform at an unsigned artists Cardiff event. Things for her then suddenly exploded and she had bookings for loads of events, mainly around the West Midlands.
After a lot of rejection, she is now a singer/songwriter and was signed to Columbia Records at the age of 18. She has written several songs that she is releasing into the music industry soon.
At concerts she still takes her brother and father, who is a supportive manager to her now.

Columbia Organisation

  • Columbia is the oldest brand name in pre-recorded sound
  • It is owned by Sony Music Entertainment (this is Columbia Records parent company),  Arista is now a sister label to Columbia Records
  • Columbia records is a major company, its ownership with Sony Music Entertainment is significant in knowing it is a stable organisation in the media.
  • Sony Music Entertainment is a leading company and supports Columbia Records, this helps our group as we know we have chosen a well known organisation which will expand our idea's in producing our artist.

  • Columbia Records has a wide range of genre's within there music, evidence of this is through all there signed artists. The image below is off the official website of Columbia Records.

  • The Genre suggests they would get a mass audience, all different ages and gender's.
  • Our group's chosen genre is 'Soul Pop' which is well known in Columbia Records although this organisation looks at these as two separate genre's whereas we will combine them, looking through our research such as the questionnaire, we have an idea of the mass audience we will be targeting which is females from young ages to adults. Columbia Records target the same audience as we do through the genre 'Soul Pop.'
One of the main artists signed to Columbia Records which our group as looked at in great detail is 'Adele', this artist is a representation of our chosen genre and types of audiences that will we be targeting.
  • An article from the official Columbia Records website talks about the artist 'Adele'...
'She's just 19, but Adele Laurie Blue Adkins - you can call her simply Adele - sings like a woman three times her age, a soul sensation in her native U.K.  who is poised to conquer America with 19, her debut album, which comes out in the States on XL /Columbia Records after debuting at #1 in the British charts.'
This review is sufficient in showing the standards of the artists signed to Columbia Records and represents Columbia Records as a major success by its production of music.

  • Celine Dion is another signed artist to Columbia Records, who's music is our chosen genre. Celine Dion became one of the biggest international stars in Soul Pop music history, selling more than 100 million albums worldwide. Her success is through the organisation of Columbia Records.

The image above is of Columbia Records Co-Chairman Steve Barnett presenting Susan Boyle with her Platinum. This is another example of the artists our group is looking for who is signed to Columbia Records.

Columbia/Epic Label Group Chairman Rob Stringer and Columbia Records Co-Chairman Steve Barnett present Columbia Records artist Jackie Evancho with her first plantinum plaque (pictured here with her manager Marc Johnston and mother Lisa Evancho)

Another successful signed artist within our groups chosen genre.

  • Columbia Records distributor is 'Columbia Label Group'
  •  RCA Label Group mainly deals with Pop and RnB and Columbia Label Group mainly deal with Rock, Dance and Alternative music. Mike Smith is the Managing Director of Columbia Label Group, Angie Somerside is the General Manager.
  • Columbia Records production elements are through successful artists.

  • Columbia Records are suitable for our project as the organisation deals with the same types of genre and audiences that are group will be looking at and using to produce our artist. The organisation is a great success and stable which will help us in following there work throughout our project. They are a simple straight forward organisation which is what our group needs in understanding the different aspects of artists in the music industry.

Institution context

The above are Minor Institutions, this simply means they are independant record labels, who operate without the funding of major record labels. Most bands and artists start out as independant record labels, however they soon work there way up to the Major Institutions. The independent record labels usually aim their releases at a small but involved audience. Minor Institutions give the artist or bands more freedom and experimentation, as well as a chance at knowing their audiences.
